My last blog entry talks about Yamazaki Distillery and it's worth visiting, no matter you are a whisky lover or not! Free admission is definitely a plus, but remember reservation is needed!
And there is a nearby spot you should not miss - Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art, an old home of Shotaro Kaga, an Osaka entrepreneur in the Showa Era, is now preserved by Asahi Beer, the municipal government and the Kyoto government. The main building, in tudor gothic style with some Chinese and Japanese elements, holds a wide collection of art of the founder of Asahi Beer, Yamamoto Tamesaburou, from lacquerware, textiles to Chinese and Western paintings; the annex designed by Tadao Ando, a Japanese self-taught architect, is divided into two wings, named as The Underground Jewellery Box and The Dream Box.
Embedded underground and located under a waterlily pond, The Underground Jewellery Box exhibits French impressionist Claude Monet's iconic Les Nymphéas, creating an environment of unique lingering charm! Masterpieces by great artists such as Van Gogh and Renoir are also displayed. The Dream Box is a cubic building for permanent exhibition. Both of them don't have any light sources except the spotlights for the art pieces, encouraging complete concentration on the works and spiritual conversation.
As the main and annex buildings are of two completely different building styles, you can enjoy both art and architecture simultaneously. There're four distinct seasons around the villa with pink sakura, greenery, red maple leaves and white snow. If you're a lover of nature, art and architecture, the museum can definitely fulfil all your wishes!
